What a weird time this has been. I seesaw from feeling doomed and in despair to enjoying all of this time with no outside schedule. I love the idea of not having a million activities to zoom to every day. It makes life more simple. But I miss structure and friends and variety, and so do my kids. This past Sunday, we looked at the clock and it was only 9:43am but it felt like nine o clock at night. We were all restless and needed something to do. I told everyone to put their shoes on and get in the car, which some did grudgingly and some did excitedly, and I drove around for a couple minutes trying to think of where to go. I drove past the hospital and saw the parking garage that Jack and I drove to the top of last year after preschool, and voila! I knew where we should go....
The deserted parking garages downtown! We drove to the very top and let the kids roam free. It was hilarious. They were so excited to be up so high around all of the buildings and to have so much space to run around. Stockton, of course, found the elevators and for the next half hour we got on the elevator, chose a floor, got out into the garage, ran up or down to the next level, and got in the elevator again. Eventually Natalie found the stairs and they were all pretty excited about those too. It was SO fun and freeing. It was Sunday, so there were already less cars than normal, but during this quarantine no one is out and about for "fun," so I think there were seriously 3 other cars in the entire parking garage, and they were all in the "reserved" spots so they probably live nearby.
Natalie had gotten dressed but hadn't brushed her hair, and the other kids were still in their jammies. I love that picture of the boys racing down the garage with Jack's daddy shirt haha. They were SO happy!
We wanted to leave before the hour mark so that we didn't have to pay for parking, so we told the kids that we had been there too long and that we had to hurry to the car otherwise the police were going to come. The boys took off running to the car hahaha, and Natalie turned around to check if we were kidding or not.
We were all so rejuvenated by the fresh air and not being at home that we decided to keep the adventure going! We were already right by campus so we parked and let the kids explore for a bit. Stockton was still worried about the police/just kind of keyed up in general so we didn't stay long.
Natalie was very proud of herself for climbing this statue. She looks like a queen on her throne.
We passed the cemetery on the way home and I pulled in thinking the kids would like to see the two resident swans that live at the pond. There were also many geese, and two families of GOSLINGS. It was SO CUTE. Austin and I must have exclaimed a thousand times, "oh my gosh they are SO cute." They were fuzzy and fluffy and yellowy and gray and waddly and just so unbelievably cute.
The daddy geese were very protective of their families, hissing if we got too close and always putting himself in front of his goslings. We also passed a nesting mother and the daddy goose was VERY protective of the nest. I thought it was very sweet.
We went home feeling lighter and happier and very pleased with our outings. I am grateful for our family and for nature!
