(July 2020)
I wanted to get some feel good exercise and we had a free Saturday, so after Austin's big morning run I asked if I could go hiking at Vedauwoo half an hour away. Of course Austin was supportive, but when I was leaving for my solo hike Jack got very sad and asked very nicely if he could come too. I had been looking forward to some alone time, but Jack is an explorer through and through and I knew this was the perfect Jack activity, so I said sure and he was so excited. He made sure we had our camelbak water backpack, the right shoes, and adventure hats.
We had an absolutely delightful time together. It felt so good to be using our arms and legs scrambling up rocks and into caves. The weather was glorious and the wild air smelled so fresh. We practically had to drag ourselves back to the car when it was time to go because we were having such a fun time. Jack learned about how to always look a few steps ahead and figure out if that way seems viable...can I keep going if I climb up this ledge? Will I be able to get down safely? Do I feel safe or does that make me uncomfortable? He was a very good self-appointed hike leader and trail maker. It was very fun to share this hike with him because these are the mountains where my dad showed me how to love hiking and nature and camping, and it feels really full-circle to now share all of this with my Jack.
